Just like any addict, gamers will protect their material of choice fiercely. A "home" away from home.Īnother factor is ADDICTION. That is literally a game about relaxation with no pressure gameplay specifically aimed at being an escape from reality to something more welcoming. Even Animal Crossing has had its fair share of issues with trolls. Such hostile acts have become commonplace and an ever-evolving scourge in the gamer universe regardless of your game of choice. Where most would probably never do this to someone they know personally, the internet enables someone to say what they want with little to no chance of punishment or retaliation. It seems like a despicable practice just to feel like one has won the online battle for supremacy and has proven harmful or fatal to the one who was doxxed on more than one occasion. It is often not limited to online information but can include addresses, phone numbers, even your current job. Doxing is when you release someone's private information in a public forum to incite further harassment or abuse of the person by strangers/predators. "Keyboard warriors" are relentless in their attempts to upset their audience, some even going as far as doxing other members of the community. Instead of being the person they would be to say a neighbor, they become what I call "the Darkside online." Going online, putting any name or photo you wish, then changing it again or starting a new one if you prove too controversial, proves too great a temptation for many. Only to promptly run back out, screaming after finding a cesspool of disrespect, hate, and from time to time, extreme racism. Catfishing, trolling, and upticks in suicide can all be attributed to the carefree, spill your poison attitude of those among the online communities we so often join in hopes of finding kindred spirits. Using their online personality to lash out at others, insult strangers, and generally behave in a way that would be considered a social taboo in person. Where most people are non-confrontational in their day-to-day lives, being online allows them to be whoever they want to be. That is a fact proven time and time again. Most people would never spew the garbage they do in an online forum in person. Why does this dark cloud of hostility surround the gaming community so fiercely? What causes gamers to become, what I prefer to think of as, the "Anti-Player gamer?" The one person who, regardless of in-game or out, makes it their mission to harass, abuse, and hinder others from enjoying their experience or gaming community? There are a few ideas on this seemingly online related phenomenon that is not exclusive to only gaming but the internet as a whole:īeing anonymous is, of course, the first and largest reason for such behavior. (Remember when games had one life and no save, yeah so do I) Look just a little further down any comment thread, and you will start seeing such statements as "Gets a Dark Souls game: cries about the difficulty," or "Git Gud." A statement that has become popular among the gaming community as a way of telling another player to increase their skill before complaining about a game's difficulty, implying whoever is complaining is just not a capable player. You will find memes and posts all over social media referencing the difficulty of its gameplay and how frustrating it is to keep dying. This game has proven a real sticking point for both gamers and trolls.
